How does a work rate wireless heart monitor?

My parents want to see strapless HRM wireless for his birthday. They want to ring in and out your heart rate target zones. They will use this working out, walking and bicycling. Would to keep their fingers on the sensors of all the clocks? Are there watches that have a sensor on the wrist? Dp you preset these? How do they work if they are receiving a constant reading? They do not want the straps on your chest! I have to order them or find them early in the objective or Dick's for this weekend. I'm confused. Strapless monitors are not monitored continuously, so my research - I had to get those with the strap.
