Step Pedometer

I have a pedometer. When I move, not just foot counts as a step. Is there a way to get an accurate reading?
My pedometer 10,670 steps ago said there is no way that is accurate. I'm trying to prepare for the walk of 5 km, and I have to see how I do.
You can always get Garmin Forerunner http://www.garmin.com one. They are expensive, but fairly accurate. Another way to determine how far you've gone is to trace the route of using this mapping software … http://www.usatf.org/routes/map Good luck.
