The Power of PEX pipe

What is so special about PEX tubing? Is not it plastic plumbing pipe? Wait a minute, I heard polybutylene pipe class action lawsuits on many about? Slow down. Not the polybutylene, who had a bad reputation several years ago. This is a hybrid, and is a lattice polybutylene pipe. Yes, it is plastic, but it offers numerous advantages water metal pipe distribution systems.

Polybutylene is gray. PEX comes in white, blue, red and colors. This is advantageous in that water cold can be conducted with a tube of blue and hot water can be driven with a red tube. PEX can expand to a third of its own diameter before bursting when it is frozen. Compare this with copper pipes and exposed benefits instantly.

Copper tubing, which is common in most houses people now live, is subject to chemical reactions that can lead to leaks. The acid is a chemical reaction. The excess acid in the copper pipe will create holes. The holes may be small, but water damage can be disastrous. This is not a problem when using PEX tubing.

PEX installations require less time to work for a plumber. Most of us know how much plumbers charge for their time, so this is a truism. No flame is required to install PEX tubing. This is another difference between PEX and copper. Go with the pex!

Check the price of copper. Compare with PEX. Again, you have a no-brainer. PEX Accessories are more expensive than copper fittings, but less is needed and the additional cost of accessories is not much when compared to the cost of the pipe itself.

I polybutylene (PB) back in the 1970s and for many years without problems. However, the installation procedure requires precise work. Personally, I think PB has a bad reputation, but PEX is installed with essentially the same procedures, and it's great.

As an old school master plumber with more 30 years of experience, I am probably supposed to support copper, but not me. For residential applications in general, PEX is the player. It is cheaper, faster to install, and in many ways it offers superior service.

PEX joints are performed in two ways. There crimping tools and crimp rings. This is the system I use. Another system, and is equally good, use a tool for expansion in the tube that opens the tube and then allows the grip on accessories. These are the two media professional installation.

Homeowners can use compression fittings for easy connections with PEX. Everything you need to make a leak proof joint is two adjustable wrenches and a compression fitting. The tube is cut with a strong professional cutting tool, but owner a house can cut the pipe with a knife or a hacksaw. There are also new accessories that allow homeowners essentially flat tire in the pipe installation for a solid fit.

If you want repipe home, repairing a section of piping, or add to your system plumbing, I recommend PEX connection. Compression fittings I spoke of earlier allow the transition from copper to PEX. You can do it, and not require super skills or Pro Tools. Go for it!
