With Resistance
$12.99 With Resistance: Kris (vocals); Joe (guitar, background vocals); Brian (guitar); Paul (bass); Mike (drums).Recorded at Portrait Studios, Lincoln Park, New Jersey.Personnel: Brian (guitar).Producers: Resistance; Chris Badami; With Resistance.Recording information: Portrait Studios, Lincoln Park East, NJ (12/20/2002/12/21/2002).The ten songs on this self-titled debut full-length from With Resistance seem over before you know it. The band delivers their music and message primarily through a straightforward hardcore sound, with melodic undertones, quality breakdowns, and change-ups ? la Botch. While many might label this New Jersey band as "metalcore," the sound on this album is more diverse than that, and the subtle differences of guitar tones makes them out to be an upfront hardcore band, as opposed to a sludgy metalcore band. Songs that start with delicate acoustic guitar quickly change to full-on hardcore and envelope the listener with it. With Resistance could quite easily be seen as a younger version of Botch, with a lot of room for development, primarily in the creativity area, as many of these songs seem hard to distinguish to the non-hardcore-tuned ear. Nonetheless, it's a quite solid start and leaves the door open for some good growth. ~ Kurt Morris |

Resistance
$15.22 A North Carolina woman dies of a flesh-eating bacterial disease. Thousands of people in West Africa are suffering from cholera. And antibiotics are rapidly becoming less and less effective at fighting what were once mild infections. The biggest threat to the future of human society may not be terrorist attacks or nuclear war, but rather microscopic bacteria. Immunologist Norbert Gualde explains in Resistance the dangers we face from bacterial resistance, asserting that we must confront the reality awaiting us--the next fatal plague may occur sooner than we think. Over the course of the twentieth century, incredible advances in medicine inspired a utopian belief among many that all common infectious diseases would eventually be eradicated. But Resistance shows that this dream is an impossible one. The book’ s riveting narrative reveals how new infectious agents and diseases are being discovered every day and how bacteria previously thought to have been destroyed are returning with a vengeance. Drawing upon the history of past epidemics, Gualde explores how new outbreaks might be predicted and controlled. He also investigates the potentially devastating social and political impact of such public health disasters, particularly in underdeveloped countries in the southern hemisphere. He ultimately argues that the constant interaction between man and microorganisms will inevitably catalyze future epidemics similar to the horrific ones of centuries past. Global outbreak monitoring and medical research on the human body’ s immune system are beginning to produce effective strategies against bacterial resistance. But the most important weapon is awareness ofthe crisis, and this engrossing and brilliantly translated study will serve as a wake-up call for us all. |

Resistance
$16.27 Convinced that several crucial historical trends are moving in the wrong direction, John Cobb and his coauthors urge Christians to live in countercultural waysas individuals and as communities. Consumerism, inequality, imperialism, and global warming, they contend, are of such magnitude that the only real response for progressive Christians is to actively resist them. In part 1, they explore how the Word of God calls Christians to resist the worlds dominant forces and reflect on how prayer can provide the conviction and commitment necessary for sustaining such a life. In part 2, they examine particular destructive forces, showing how these trends attained dominance and analyzing their effects. Part 3 then explores two theological movements that have stressed the need for resistance: Latin American liberation theology and feminist theology. Concluding, in part 4, they give specific examples of how individuals and churches can live in countercultural ways. |

Insulin Resistance: Childhood Precursors and Adult Disease
$109.35 From the reviews:pThe editors have gathered world experts in this recently recognized problem in children as well as in the adult disease. Molecular mechanisms and disturbances in physiologic functioning are well covered and need appreciation by comprehensive therapists. Contributors to this book make this learning seem to be easy. (William H Wehrmacher, Comprehensive Therapy, December, 2008)pThe prevalence of disorders related to insulin resistance has continued to increase throughout the developed and developing world. The worlda (TM)s population has continued to become more obese and sedentary. Of great concern in the last decade is the extension of these deleterious lifestyle patterns to the pediatric population, leading to both obesity and the appearance of insulin resistance-related disorders in youth as well as adults. Insulin Resistance: Childhood Precursors and Adult Disease presents topics related to insulin resistance and its consequences across the lifespan. In the first section of the book examining epidemiology, the contributors review controversies over the definition of metabolic syndrome in adults and children, current knowledge regarding the epidemiology of insulin resistance in the pediatric population and the contributions of the prenatal and early childhood environment to the development of insulin resistance. The Second part of the book explores pathophysiology, with reviews of the techniques used to study insulin resistance, as well as current knowledge of the molecular and physiologic mechanisms of insulin resistance, including the contributions of adipose tissue and biochemical mediators. This section concludes with discussion of the relationship between insulin resistance and cardiovascular, endothelial, liver and gonadal disorders. The final section of the book explores the impact of exercise and weight loss medications on insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is likely to be the most important public health concern in many parts of@[Vffffgÿ¾Úx |
